Build resilience in your career

The last few years have been rough. From Covid-19 and its aftermath, to shifting global climates, we have all had to be resilient and flexible in our daily lives – and our careers. The traditional career path that was established years ago is no longer desirable for all, and accountants are choosing to adapt and pivot.

One of the key characteristics that have become central to navigating the constant changes is Resilience. While still important, EQ (emotional quotient) and IQ (intelligence quotient) are making way for Adaptability and Resilience. Essentially, how good are you at adapting to difficult or challenging experiences – mentally, emotionally, and externally (behaviorally) – has become increasingly important.

While some of us are better at this than others, it is still a skill – one that can be learned and practiced.

Here are some key tips we’ve found work well:

Build sustainable networks. Your personal network can buffer you when things get tough. Make sure you focus on building relationships – not contacts – and nurture these relationships over time.

Be a lifelong learner. By staying up to date on emerging technologies and industry trends by constantly upskilling and learning, you can keep your skills relevant and in demand – no matter what the market does. Remember that learning doesn’t have to be a formal thing. Industry conferences, workshops, online short courses, and personal development programs all contribute to building your knowledge base and skills set.

Manage your career like a business. In person and online, make sure that your personal brand is on point – and ready to sell your skills. Update your LinkedIn profile, connect with and follow industry leaders, and keep your work history up to date. You can take charge of your personal brand by reflecting on your strengths, past experiences, current role, or development opportunities – showcasing the value that you would bring to any organization.

Find a mentor. Feedback and guidance are invaluable to building a resilient career. They will help you reflect on what you are good at, where you could extend your career, and build confidence in your evolving abilities.
